the
learnalism project
lear•nal•ism |ˈlərnˌalˌizəm|
noun
The act of exploring, learning from, and sharing with the world, the living stories of how humans are designing and manifesting sustainable participation in a global ecosystem.
The word Learnalism, as perhaps you have figured out, is a combination of the words “learn” and “journalism.” This project will explore and share some of the many ways that sustainable human participation is taking place in the world.
The first iteration of the Learnalism Project kicked into gear in early 2010, when we began to visit projects in the North Eastern United States. Since early March, we (Sophie and Sean) have been on a tour of North America, profiling projects across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
After visiting each project we will create a page on this website depicting what is being created and what effect it’s having on the world. We plan to provide a holistic examination of each project we visit - looking at the many components of a project, including:
Who created it
What inspires the creators - their core beliefs/values, and what their intentions and goals are
How the creators made the leap from conceiving the idea, to beginning to actualize it
Who is affected
What the effects are - both broadly and specifically
How dynamics around race, class, age, faith and gender impact the work of the project and how new paradigms are being created
Relationship with surrounding environments, both the ecological and social
The financial landscape of a project
What the day-to-day work includes
Now you might be wondering, “How Are You Selecting Projects?” And the good news is we’ve got an answer. Click here to see what it is
